The 2026 HIR contest calendar at a glance

The HIR Academic Writing Contest runs three cycles a year, so there are three chances to enter – but each has its own deadlines. Here is how to read the 2026 calendar and choose the cycle that fits you.

Three cycles, three deadlines

For 2026, the Spring cycle closes registration on April 25, takes submissions through May 31, and holds Defense Day on June 29. The Summer cycle closes registration June 25, takes submissions through August 31, with Defense Day on October 5. The Fall-Winter cycle runs on rolling registration, with submissions due January 2, 2027 and Defense Day on February 5, 2027. Always confirm dates against the official contest page before you register.

Which cycle should you enter?

Pick the cycle that gives you enough runway to read, draft, and revise without rushing – roughly six to eight weeks is comfortable. If your school term is busy in spring, summer’s longer submission window may suit you better. The standard is the same in every cycle; only the calendar changes.

Working backward from Defense Day

Strong contestants plan in reverse. Fix your submission date, then set internal milestones: a chosen question two weeks before drafting, a complete first draft a week before the deadline, and a final proofread against the rubric the day before you file. Leaving room to revise is how good essays become medal essays.

Whichever cycle you choose, register early – capacity is limited and admission is rolling.
